Black Keys Deliver
The evening was off to a good start, opening with Jessy Wilson, a protege of Patrick Carney. Accompanied by my very good friend and lovely wife, I had high expectations for this band. Ms. Wilson exhibited an easy flow, offering a nice mix of soulful R & B with unquestionable “Keys-ish” influence. She showed a strong stage presence for a new artist, however, the 30 minutes afforded her along with the small audience seemed a disservice. I am optimistic we have not seen the last of her as her initial effort seems filled with promise. Modest Mouse got a much better push and audience, unlike Ms. Wilson, they did not deserve as much attention in my estimation. Their sound quality was atrocious, to put it plainly. While the instruments and orchestration were solid, I would be hard pressed to have made out a single lyric or word the front man had to say. There was unquestionably talent there, noting the banjo and drum work in particular, but for the rep which preceded them, the group did not deliver. Enter Randy Travis with a tights 1 hr 45 minute set, the audience received notice that rock n roll is indeed still alive and in good hands. The sound was superior. The gusto and delivery were knock you on your ass rock n roll. The blues infusion of earlier work was met with the flow and ease of their more pop friendly later offerings. Stand out tracks were “Gold on the Ceiling”, “Howling for You”, “Tighten Up”, “Ten Cent Pistol” and “Little Black Submarine” which got the audience up and singing. The guitar work by Auerbach was blisteringly tasty. The drum work by the man of no words, Carney, was astoundingly good. There was very little banter, except for Dan Auerbach thanking the audience for their support and attendance, along with two brief intros to Pat Carney on drums. This did not matter. One tiny intermission preceding the encore drew the required call back. Honestly, this group came to play and brought forth a bluesy rock conflagration that was just perfect. The Scotiabank Centre is a great venue. A great time was had by all and The Black Keys allowed for a superb rock show, capping off another great trip to TO. The Black Keys are simply outstanding and well worth your time.
